JOHN E. FITZGERALD "LARCENY" KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY 92 PROOF JOHN E. FITZGERALD "LARCENY" KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY 92 PROOF

Larceny's name is based on the legend about John E. Fitzgerald. A corrupt U.S. Treasury agent, Fitzgerald filled his own jugs with whiskey stolen from the best barrels in bonded aging warehouses under his control. Those short-filled barrels came to be known as "Fitzgeralds." In the late 1800s an enterprising distillery created a story about him being a distiller, which lead to the creation of the successful Old Fitzgerald brand name. When Prohibition stunted the growth of the industry, the brand was sold to Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle. He opened the Stitzel-Weller distillery on Kentucky Derby day in 1935, making wheatrecipe Bourbon under the reincarnated Old Fitzgerald name.

The Van Winkles operated the distillery until it was purchased by a conglomerate decades later, which renamed it the Old Fitzgerald Distillery. Several changes of ownership ensued and far more Bourbon was produced than the world could drink, much of which was sold to private label customers. (One of them was Julian P. Van Winkle III, who created the Pappy Van Winkle brand.)

In 1999 the Old Fitzgerald brand, remaining whiskey stock, and the Bernheim Distillery in downtown Louisville were purchased by Heaven Hill of Bardstown, Kentucky, the largest family-owned independent distillery in the U.S.A.

The third-generation owners make Evan Williams, Elijah Craig, Rittenhouse, several other famous whiskies-and Old Fitzgerald.

The whiskey is still made from a mash bill (recipe) that uses wheat as the secondary grain. Bourbon is, by law, made from a grain mix of at least 51% corn; the remaining several grains vary according to the master distiller's wish to control certain fermentation processes and develop a signature flavor profile. While rye grains are commonly used as the second grain of choice, Larceny's is wheat. The choice of wheat results in a slightly softer, rounder texture, and lends a latent mellow sweetness to the finished whiskey; exactly what makes it so satisfying to sip neat or on the rocks.

Old Fitzgerald Larceny is a small batch whiskey of exceptional quality that has won several medals since its 2012 debut, including Gold at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Draeger's exceptionally experienced Wine Stewards selected this single barrel, filled on February 27, 2014, to share with Draeger's customers. Enjoy aromas of toffee and butterscotch and flavors of caramel and honey, with a long, mellow finish.

TABLAS CREEK 2020 PATELIN DE TABLAS BLANC OR 2019 RED TABLAS CREEK 2020 PATELIN DE TABLAS BLANC OR 2019 RED

Perhaps you've developed a taste for juicy, fresh-tasting domestic Rhône-style red wine blends based on grapes such as Grenache, Syrah, or Mourvèdre. Maybe you've been adventurous enough to give aromatic whites like Viognier or Roussanne a sip on occasion. If you enjoy these domestic wines you likely owe a nod to Tablas Creek Vineyard, because they have been pioneers in establishing those and other south-of-France grape varieties in vineyards along the west coast and beyond.

Some quick history: In the late 1980s Robert Haas, a highly successful wine importer and the Perrin family of Chateauneuf-du-Pape fame joined in a search for a place in California with a Mediterranean climate with rocky limestone soils. A few miles northwest of Paso Robles in what is now known as the Adelaida District, 12 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, they found their land. Grape cuttings were imported in 1990, and, after a 3 year virus quarantine at U.C. Davis, they were planted in 1994. Tablas Creek Vineyard then became a nursery supplying many wineries in California and a number of other states, beginning its own wine production in 1997. More than 600 wineries now use Tablas cuttings!

In addition to their high-tier estate wines, Tablas Creek makes its Patelin label (French slang for "neighborhood"), made substantially from grapes sourced from local area growers who are mostly using Tablas cuttings. Patelin red's meaty character, which is derived from its blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, is accented with dark fruits, mineral and spice nuances, and bright acidity. Patelin Blanc is made with Grenache Blanc, Viongier, and three other white Rhone varieties and presents a creamy mouthfeel with flavors hinting of apricot, nectarine, pink grapefruit, and green herbs set off by refreshing acids. Both wines are highly respected and terrific values.

BRANDINI 2015 BAROLO BRANDINI 2015 BAROLO

Sisters Giovanna and Serena Bagnasco oversee winemaking at Agricola Brandini, a small farm and winery based in La Morra within the Barolo district of Piedmont in the Alps foothills of northwestern Italy. The winery makes several wines, none more important than Barolo. It is made from the Nebbiolo grape and often referred to as the Wine of Kings because of its power and perfume. Barolo's eleven recognized winemaking villages are famous for making this full-bodied red that is at home on a table laden with game birds or robust cuts of meat - not to mention the white truffles for which the area is also famous. The wine's elegant nose of fragrant rose and spice leads to mixed red fruit flavors framed by firm tannins and nice acidity.

FAUST 2018 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON FAUST 2018 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Faust Estate Vineyard, an old dairy farm prior to grape planting in 1998, is located in the Coombsville AVA east of the town of Napa. The area butts up against the Vaca Mountains and contains red volcanic soils slowly deposited over millions of years. Originally thought by some to be too cool to grow quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Coombsville turns out to yield grapes that produce richly fruited wines capable of serious balance. Besides the Coombsville grapes this wine includes a minor amount of Oakville and Rutherford fruit. Winemaker David Jelinek's skill adds layers of minerality and firm but silky tannins that make for a great sip revealing aromas and flavors hinting of black cherry, plum, earth, cedar, dark chocolate, and more.

LUIS SEABRA 2019 "XISTO ILIMITADO" DOURO TINTO LUIS SEABRA 2019 "XISTO ILIMITADO" DOURO TINTO

Some 60 miles up the Douro River from the city of Oporto on Portugal's north coast is the middle section of Port country. It is an area of steep terraced hillside vineyards made up of thin flakes of fast-draining yellow schist ("Xisto") that forces grapes to send roots down as much as 65 feet for water. Summers are blazingly hot, winters are cold. World class sweet, fortified wines called Port have been made here for several centuries. The dozens of grapes allowed in those blends also make excellent dry table wines in the hands of winemakers like Luis Seabra, formerly of world-renowned Port producer Nieeport. His Xisto Ilimitado ("unlimited schist") dry red is full of dark fruit flavors accented by aromas of wet stone, violets and herbs.

POST AND BEAM 2020 NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY POST AND BEAM 2020 NAPA VALLEY CHARDONNAY

The Post and Beam label is a reference to the simple but strong and elegant style of construction of many of the barns dotting America's rural landscape. The winery is a new creation of Far Niente, the legendary Napa Valley producer of world class Chardonnay and Cabernet. Post and Beam relies on carefully selected Napa vineyards that enable the company to expand its production while offering its customers wines positioned more for current drinking than long term cellaring. Post and Beam Chardonnay spent 10 months in (51% new) French oak barrels, and was not put through malolactic fermentation in order to minimize buttery flavors. Think tropical fruit, fresh flowers, citrus and stone fruits, balanced by bright acidity and minerality.

TRUCHARD 2019 CARNEROS NAPA VALLEY PINOT NOIR TRUCHARD 2019 CARNEROS NAPA VALLEY PINOT NOIR

Truchard wines have long occupied a place on our shelves because we value their balance between ripe (but not overripe) fruit, minerality, acidity, spice, and oak. Dr. Tony and Jo Ann Truchard bought land in Carneros just southwest of the town of Napa in 1973 before most people thought it a proper place for grape growing, and were early adopters of drip irrigation and rainwater catchment. The vines that "made" this Pinot Noir are 23-45 years old, grown on thin soils in Carneros' rolling hills. The wine offers a plummy/black cherry nose followed by flavors suggesting red currants, rhubarb, vanilla, and spice. Delicate tannins and firm acidity frame this excellent value in California Pinot Noir.

ROGUE COLOMBE 2016 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE ROGUE COLOMBE 2016 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines are blends made in and around the town of the same name in France's southern Rhône Valley. They are full-bodied wines (usually red, but many producers including this one make white versions, too) combining ripeness, spice, and tannins in a way that makes them superb matches with red meats and spicier fare. The sandy, rocky vineyards that yielded the fruit for this rich and aromatic wine are slightly northeast of the village and have been owned by the same family for 200 years. Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault combine to offer aromas and flavors like fragrant roses, cherries, plums and a hint of caramel.

BEDROCK 2019 OLD VINE ZINFANDEL BEDROCK 2019 OLD VINE ZINFANDEL

Morgan Twain-Peterson (Master of Wine, 2017) founded much-lauded Bedrock in 2007, making his first wines in a converted chicken coop. Peterson's winemaking skills are focused on using grapes from recognized heritage vineyard sites, like his family's Bedrock Vineyard in Sonoma Valley, and others scattered from San Benito Valley south of San Jose to the far north part of Mendocino to the gold country's Shenandoah Valley. Many of these old vineyards were planted in the 1800s with field blends that could include a dozen or more grape varieties besides Zinfandel, each of which can and does contribute flavors and textures to a finished wine. Bedrock Old Vine Zinfandel is a rich and layered blend made from nine of these vineyards and widely known for its excellence.

CELLAR MAS DOIX 2019 "LES CRESTES" PRIORAT CELLAR MAS DOIX 2019 "LES CRESTES" PRIORAT

Crave a big, powerful red wine to enjoy with, say, grilled lamb? Head to the mountains, the ones in the small Priorat district around twenty miles west of Tarragona near Spain's east coast. It's a land of rugged beauty, twisty roads, and centuries-old terraces carved into dark laminar slate soils called "llicorella." Hot in the daytime and cold at night, it produced inky, rustic, locally-consumed wines until the 1980s when several pioneering winemakers introduced modern winemaking techniques. "Les Crestes," by Cellars Mas Doix, is an example of Priorat's full-bodied twenty-first-century wines. It's 80% Grenache, 10% Carignan, and 10% Syrah, matured for 8 months in 2-year-old French oak. Its floral and spice aromas are layered with ripe red fruit flavors in a big, concentrated, polished wine.

GOBELSBURG 2020 KAMPTAL AUSTRIA TROKEN (DRY) RIESLING GOBELSBURG 2020 KAMPTAL AUSTRIA TROKEN (DRY) RIESLING

Some of the brightest, most intense wines made in Europe come from Austria. The eastern part of the country is where several high quality wine districts are situated. Kamptal is one of them, just a few miles south of the Czech border. Riesling production is small in Austria compared to the Grüner Veltliner grape, but its quality is often spectacular. Schloss Gobelsburg makes that kind of wine. Parts of the cellar date from 1171 when monks were planting vines, and they did most of the farming until the late 1990s. Several vineyards at varying elevations along the Kamp River north of Langenlois provide the grapes for this blend. It's light-bodied, dry like most Austrian wines ("Troken," on the label), and loaded with hints of peach and apple. Its finish is lengthy with zippy acidity.

MERRY EDWARDS 2019 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC MERRY EDWARDS 2019 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC

Merry Edwards retired as a legend last year after a 46 year career of winemaking, consulting, building wineries for clients, and developing grape clones even before their value was widely appreciated. She created this now-famous Sauvignon Blanc in 2001. The grapes for this delectable wine are sourced from four vineyards in Sonoma's Russian River Valley and fermented in French oak barrels. The lees are stirred twice weekly for body and richness of flavor, and the wine ages in barrel until April following the vintage. The payoff: an unusually rich but crisp dry wine bursting with tropical fruit, red grapefruit, and melon aromas and flavors. Merry's handpicked winemaking successor Heidi Von Der Mehden made this wine under the new ownership of the esteemed Louis Roederer Champagne house (think Cristal), also owner of Roederer Estate and Scharffenberger Cellars in Mendocino's Anderson Valley.

KANZLER 2018 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR KANZLER 2018 RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY PINOT NOIR

Steve and Lynda Kanzler bought a decrepit old apple orchard property on which to raise their kids a little southwest of Sebastopol in 1994. By 1996, when son Alex was 10 years old, they decided to grow Pinot Noir on the cool and breezy site. That was against the advice of many grape growers, but the Kanzlers hired a good vineyard manager. Soon their superior quality grapes were being sold to boutique wineries and garnering excellent reviews; their own winemaking began in 2004. Son Alex began making the wine part time in 2011 and three years later Kanzler became his full time gig. His 2019 RRV Pinot Noir is a supple combination of aromas and flavors suggesting rose petals, red and black berries, Bing cherries, sage, light spice, and subtle oak. It's a superb wine from the Sebastopol Hills, coolest subregion (non-official) of the Russian River Valley.

KELT VSOP RARE COGNAC KELT VSOP RARE COGNAC

After Kelt VSOP Rare's 4- to 12-year-old Cognacs are blended they're put into two-thirds-full Limousin oak barrels, loaded onto a ship, and sent on a Tour du Monde–literally a trip around the world! From Le Havre in northern France the ship makes its way through the Mediterranean and Middle East, where heat and the motion of the ship accelerates the barrel aging process. Then it's on to Hong Kong, New York, and back across the Atlantic to Le Havre. Constant temperature and air pressure changes and spirits sloshing inside barrels results in sea-aged brandy worthy of the Kelt Cognac name. It's a luxurious sip, bursting with vanilla, apricot, fig, hazelnuts, and licorice wrapped in a long finish.
