ROBERT MONDAVI, 2013 OAKVILLE FUME BLANC ROBERT MONDAVI, 2013 OAKVILLE FUME BLANC

Robert Mondavi's well known Napa Valley Fume Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc) has been a standard of quality for decades. This more exclusive Oakville bottling is made 100% from grapes grown in perhaps the most famous vineyard in California - legendary To Kalon, which surrounds the winery itself. 2013 was a very dry year; the lack of rain from January through March contributed to early "bud break" (and later, an early harvest) in what is often called an epic year. Almost all of the wine (89% Sauvignon Blanc, 11% Semillon) was barrel fermented in older oak, resulting in a rich mouth feel that accompanies flavors including orange rind and lemon curd. Enjoy one of California's most luxurious Sauvignon Blanc wines at a very special price.

RUTHERFORD RANCH, 2015 RESERVE CHARDONNAY RUTHERFORD RANCH, 2015 RESERVE CHARDONNAY

Rutherford Ranch Winery sits on the site of the original Round Hill Winery dating from 1978. When the founders retired in 2000 shareholders Marko and Theo Zaninovich acquired the property along the Silverado Trail on Napa Valley's east side. They replanted the vineyards to high grade vines and now produce excellent wines under Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing guidelines. This inaugural release of the Reserve Chardonnay hails from a single vineyard in the cool Carneros region in the southern Napa Valley. It was aged for 10 months in French and American oak and allowed to complete 100% malolactic fermentation. It is a rich, elegant wine on its own and a natural accompaniment to richer fish and seafood dishes.

DOMAINE TINEL-BLONDELET, 2016 SANCERRE DOMAINE TINEL-BLONDELET, 2016 SANCERRE

White wines labeled Sancerre are always Sauvignon Blanc and prized by millions for their crisp, lightly floral and mineral-y rendition of the grape whose hints of grass and gooseberry are muted compared to many new world Sauvignon Blancs. This Sancerre is made by Annick Tinel and her daughter Marlène, twelfth and thirteenth generation winemakers in Thauvenay, a village of about 300 people a couple miles south of the town of Sancerre. The women age their wine on its lees for four months to add some richness to its steely, flinty core. It's wonderful with foods such as scallops, sushi and goat cheeses.

DOMAINE JEAN DAUVISSAT, 2014 CHABLIS DOMAINE JEAN DAUVISSAT, 2014 CHABLIS

Chardonnay is a chameleon grape, meaning that it takes on different characteristics depending on where it is grown and how it is vinified. Case in point is Jean Dauvissant's Chablis, grown in some 40 different parcels surrounding the small hamlet of Chablis, technically part of Burgundy but located in its own designated wine growing district about 75 miles northwest of Dijon, France. This is classic Chablis reflecting the famous limestone-based Kimmeridgian soils of the area-flinty, with wet stone aromas and white fruits and citrus flavors wrapped in a dry and very delicate cloak that fairly begs for fresh oysters or other shellfish.

STOLLER, 2016 ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR STOLLER, 2016 ROSÉ OF PINOT NOIR

One of Draeger's rosé stars of the season is Stoller Rosé of Pinot Noir. Located near Dayton, Oregon a little southwest of Dundee, the Stoller property produces excellent Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and several other varieties from the largest contiguous vineyard in the Dundee Hills, one that is certified Low Input Viticulture and Enology (LIVE) and Salmon Safe. 2016 was a warmer than average year in Oregon's Willamette Valley, but by harvest time (Stoller's earliest in history) temperatures dropped to near perfect levels and the resulting wine is exquisitely aromatic with hints of ruby grapefruit and other citrus, followed by flavors of tropical fruits. It's wildly popular and with good reason.

Regular: $19.99   Special: $17.99

GUNDLACH BUNDSCHU, 2015 GEWÃœRTZTRAMINER GUNDLACH BUNDSCHU, 2015 GEWÜRTZTRAMINER

Thanksgiving is coming. We will be queried with questions like "what should I serve with turkey" for several weeks leading up to the holiday. We'll save you the trouble and just tell you to serve what you enjoy. We might also suggest that you try a Gewürztraminer. The lychee and rose petal flavor notes in many Gewürztraminers are quite appealing with widely varied foods, including but not limited to curries, pates, spicy foods, blue and muenster cheeses-and the Turkey Day mix of meaty, rich and sweet/sour dishes. Historic Sonoma winery Gundlach Bundschu makes a bone dry version with suggestions of tropical fruits and lemon that would be killer on any Thanksgiving table.

LE GALANTIN, 2016 BANDOL ROSÉ LE GALANTIN, 2016 BANDOL ROSÉ

One of the most famous wine growing regions in France, Bandol, is located along the Mediterranean coast between Marseilles and Toulon. Reds and whites are produced there but Bandol's most famous wines are arguably its rosés (think Domaine Tempier or Château Pradeaux). They're based on the grape Mouvèdre (it must be at least 50% of any Bandol rosé or red), which is often blended with Grenache and/or Cinsault to soften tannins a bit. That's the kind of blend used by Le Galantin. It makes a dry, fruity, crisp and refreshing wine that has the body to accompany Mediterranean-influenced meals such as meat-and rice-filled stuffed grape leaves (dolmas) and Greek salad from Draeger's deli case.

Regular: $21.99   Special: $18.99

TREFETHEN, 2015 DRY RIESLING TREFETHEN, 2015 DRY RIESLING

One of Napa Valley's original modern wineries, Trefethen, is famous for elegantly crafted Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon and seven other grape varieties. One of them is Riesling, and it's been made from grapes grown on this historic property in Napa's Oak Knoll district for four decades. Trefethen's Riesling is dry and marvelously fragrant with a nose hinting of jasmine and orange blossom. Apple, lime and guava flavors abound, backed up by minerality that makes this wine a wonderful accompaniment to Asian and fusion dishes and a natural with many fish and shellfish meals- and, of course, the broad mix of dishes found on many Thanksgiving tables. Gold Medal: Los Angles International Wine Competition.

MACROSTIE, 2014 WILDCAT MOUNTAIN SONOMA
COAST PINOT NOIR MACROSTIE, 2014 WILDCAT MOUNTAIN SONOMA COAST PINOT NOIR

Steve MacRostie's history of winemaking in Sonoma County dates back more than 40 years. He and his wife Thale founded MacRostie Winery in 1987 and partnered with more than half a dozen famous vineyard owners in making small lots of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from all corners of the Sonoma Coast appellation. Their Wildcat Mountain Vineyard is located in the cool, foggy Sonoma region of Carneros overlooking San Pablo Bay at 700'. MacRostie winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen blended multiple lots of wine from this site to produce the final 2014 Wildcat Mountain Pinot Noir, an elegantly rich creation that one critic called crisp and plush at the same time!

FROG'S LEAP, 2015 NAPA VALLEY ZINFANDEL FROG'S LEAP, 2015 NAPA VALLEY ZINFANDEL

If you're looking for big alcohol, big bottles, and "big" flavors this is the wrong winery. John Williams and associates at Frog's Leap don't do big. This winery has always been about subtlety, balance, nuance and restraint. (OK, maybe restraint is the wrong word-look up The Story at frogsleap.com. You'll have a good time reading it!) Frog's Leap Zinfandel is a "dinner" zin, made to go with food. It includes 20% Petite Sirah and 2% Carignan for their added color, aromatics and earthiness. You'll appreciate tart cherry and baking spice aromas that will complement all manner of meals from barbecue to grilled chicken to pasta with red sauce.

FAUST, 2014 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON FAUST, 2014 NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Faust is one of several wineries owned by the Huneeus family. Agustin and his wife Valerie are natives of Chile and grew Concha y Toro into Chile's largest winery in the 1960s, moving out of Chile during political upheaval in the early 1970s. They eventually became partners in Napa's Franciscan Winery, and founded their own venture with son Francisco in 2004. The portfolio includes Quintessa, Illumination, Flowers and Faust. The Faust Cabernet is made from grapes sourced from family vineyards in Rutherford and Coombsville as well as such diverse sites as Atlas Peak, Mt. Veeder, Oakville and St. Helena. It's rich, full of dark fruit, with firm tannins and a long finish.

DUCKHORN, 2013 NAPA VALLEY MERLOT DUCKHORN, 2013 NAPA VALLEY MERLOT

Dan Duckhorn and his wife embraced Merlot as their flagship wine some 40 years ago. Their business decision has been validated by unknown thousands of wine lovers as Duckhorn has become (and remains) a Napa Valley icon. Winemaker Renée Ary follows in the footsteps of only three former winemakers as she crafts the richly flavored wine Duckhorn fans expect. Made from a mix of estate and contract-grown grapes from multiple Napa Valley sites, the 2013 Merlot was blended with small lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for complexity and balance and reveals notes of cigar box, spice, cherry, raspberry and plum bound together by fine-grained tannins. 90 points Wine Spectator.

CHâTEAU DES LAURET,
2012 PUISSEGUN SAINT-ÉMILION CHÂTEAU DES LAURET, 2012 PUISSEGUN SAINT-ÉMILION

If you enjoy red wines from the New World (the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa) such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot you should know that their DNA would reveal roots in the greater Bordeaux region near the Atlantic Ocean. The climate and soils of St-Émilion, east of the city of Bordeaux, favor Merlot, which tolerates damp soils and shorter growing seasons better than Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlots from St-Émilion tend to be rich and round, and Château des Lauret (owned by a branch of the Rothschild family) is no exception. It's about 92% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc. Enjoy it with a Draeger's small loin lamb chop or a rich beef stew.

ALPHA OMEGA, 2013 II RED WINE ALPHA OMEGA, 2013 II RED WINE

Famous and "important" wine estates in Bordeaux and Burgundy often make a second but certifiably high quality wine at a somewhat lower price point, using grapes from less expensive vineyard plots and less costly barrels or stainless tanks for fermentation. Napa Valley's Alpha Omega winery does too, sourcing fruit from privately-owned boutique vineyards in scattered Napa Valley locations as well as Merlot from famous Newton Vineyard on Spring Mountain. The mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes are hand sorted, then fermented only in stainless steel tanks to achieve a dark fruit profile and smooth tannins for your enjoyment with less aging. The wine is opulent with a good backbone of acidity.

GRAMMERCY CELLARS,
2013 COLUMBIA VALLEY SYRAH GRAMMERCY CELLARS, 2013 COLUMBIA VALLEY SYRAH

Whether the meal features, say, rosemary-rubbed butterflied leg of lamb or grilled Draeger's sausages or a humble pulled pork sandwich there is an elegant wine you ought to experience: one of the world's best Syrahs, made by Master Sommelier Greg Harrington (and his wife Pam and their partner Brandon Moss) in Walla Walla, Washington. Modeled after some of Europe's best Syrahs, this one is sourced from two vineyards in the southern Yakima Valley and two vineyards near Walla Walla. Think olives, pepper, lavender, plum and other dark fruit notes, dial in a little earthiness, and you've got the idea.

CHÂTEAU DU CHATELARD, 2015 FLEURIE BEAUJOLAIS CHÂTEAU DU CHATELARD, 2015 FLEURIE BEAUJOLAIS

Want a red wine with a fish dish? Crave a ripe, silky red with a spicy pan-Asian meal? May we suggest Beaujolais, made from the Gamay grape at the far southern end of France's Burgundy region. High in acid, low in tannin and famously juicy, Beaujolais is a go-to red when the meal doesn't exactly call for a heavier glassful. A few villages in the area get to put their name on the labels because of their quality history. Fleurie is one of them. Chatelard's Fleurie comes from grapes grown in vineyards as old as 75 years. (The winery dates from the 12th century.) You'll appreciate the wild strawberry, black currant, and rose petal nuances; serve it very lightly chilled.

Regular: $17.99   Special: $14.99

DOMAINE DE BEAURENARD, CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE DOMAINE DE BEAURENARD, CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

Made in and around the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the southern Rhône from a mix of grapes, these full bodied wines combine ripeness, spice, and tannins in a way that makes them superb matches with red meats and spicier fare. The seventh generation of the Coulon family farms its Beaurenard vineyards organically and biodynamically. Their blend leads with Grenache and is supported by a little Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and several other grapes. The cherry, blueberry, rosemary, juniper and cedar nuances in Beaurenard's Chateauneuf would marry a Draeger's grilled ribeye steak handsomely!

Regular: $44.99   Special: $39.99

LENOTTI, 2010 AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA LENOTTI, 2010 AMARONE DELLA VALPOLICELLA

Lenotti is located in the village of Bardolino along the shore of Lake Garda, about 30 miles north of Verona. The winery produces an Amarone della Valpolicella-or Amarone. This is wine made after the grapes have been partially dried for several months, concentrating the juice and increasing skin contact. The resulting wine is aged 3 to 5 years in large wood tanks, and is ready to drink on release. The wines are very ripe (in a good dried-cherry way), low in acid and velvety. They're well matched with lots of pork, veal and poultry dishes-and especially with Draeger's beef short ribs braised in Amarone or Valpolicella.

PATRICE RION, 2014 NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES
VIEILLES VIGNES RED BURGUNDY PATRICE RION, 2014 NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES VIEILLES VIGNES RED BURGUNDY

If the idea of a racy, bright, non-jammy Pinot Noir excites you turn your gaze to the northern end of the Côte d'Or in France's Burgundy region-where Pinot Noir came from in the first place. The limestone/clay mix soils in the area produce wines that are famous for fragrance, acidity, and balance. Patrice Rion's Pinot Noir from the area known as Nuits-Saint-Georges is aged 18 months in oak barrels; it's a fruity style (in a restrained Burgundy way) with cherry and currant flavors framed by a little spiciness, a hint of chalkiness and eucalyptus, and moderate tannins. Try it with steaks, lamb chops or dishes that include mushrooms.

CAMIGLIANO, 2012 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO CAMIGLIANO, 2012 BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

Sangiovese is the predominant red grape of the Tuscany region of Italy. Local clones of the grape are grown around the village of Montalcino, and when vinified and aged under certain conditions the wine may be labeled Brunello di Montalcino. Brunellos are often "bigger" or fleshier than nearby Chiantis and Vino Nobile di Montepulcianos, and have found a ready audience (especially in America, where almost 1 in 3 bottles are sold). Camigliano’s elegant Brunello is aged 24 months in a mixture of barrel sizes and spends another 2 years aging in both stainless steel tanks and in bottle before release. It is concentrated and reveals hints of cherry, licorice, leather and spice. 93 points Wine Spectator.

ELIJAH CRAIG SINGLE BARREL DRAEGER’S SELECT BOURBON ELIJAH CRAIG SINGLE BARREL DRAEGER'S SELECT BOURBON

Bourbon is America's hands down favorite whisky of the last 150 years or so. Made primarily from corn (legally at least 51%) it can be (and is) made anywhere in the U.S., but production is centered in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. Heaven Hill Distillery (the largest family-owned U.S. distillery) makes Elijah Craig, a famous bourbon named after the tobacco grower, distiller, Baptist minister and entrepreneur of the late 1700s in what is now Kentucky. Craig was reputed to have been the first to age whiskey in charred oak barrels, now one of the legal requirements for whiskey labeled bourbon. Our staff's barrel sampling resulted in this outstanding single barrel bourbon (94 proof) being bottled for us and included in this newsletter. We have no doubt you will appreciate its rich flavor and long finish.

CRU D’ARCHE-PUGNEAU, 2011 SAUTERNES CRU D'ARCHE-PUGNEAU, 2011 SAUTERNES

One of the ethereal experiences most 21st century wine drinkers have never had is the enjoyment of a fine Sauternes, one of the world's best sweet wines, because America talks dry when it comes to wine, even though lots of us sip soda all day long. Do yourself a favor and give this a try. The winery is in the Sauternes region of greater Bordeaux, surrounded on pretty much all sides by much more famous (and very expensive) producers. What the Francis Daney family bottles from its 32-odd acres of grapes is compelling. Its Sauternes is a blend of Semillon (for its richness and body), Sauvignon Blanc (for its acidity), and Muscadelle (for its fruity nuances). It's a wine with an extraordinary balance of sweetness and acidity, resulting from the "noble rot" known as Botrytis cinerea, a condition that allows a beneficial mold to attack the grapes and causes them to shrivel and concentrate their juice. Sip it by itself. Pair it with bleu or fresh goat cheese. Try it with salty Serrano or Parma ham. Indulge it with Peking duck. Drink it with not-too-sweet desserts. And, as more than one commentator has pointed out, it's very good with roast chicken! It's all about balance-and, in this case, serious value!
