BerkeleyJohn Scharffenberger formed Scharffenberger Cellars to manufacture
sparkling wines and in 1995, he sold the company to Veuve Clicquot.
In 1996, he formed Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker with Robert Steinberg,
applying the artisan methods of making champagne to chocolate. He co-wrote
the James Beard award-winning Essence of Chocolate.
